Do you have a second-hand car for sale? Prior to advertising your car for sale take a look at car magazines, local newspapers, Parkers guide and other price guides to find the market value of your vehicle. Would you like to someone to buy your car for cash without having to trade it in? One of the most frequent questions we here is “where is the best place to sell my car?” or “how do I sell my car for cash?” Check out following resources to get some ideas and prices on selling your car privately.

Remember when advertising a vehicle for sale that the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 will apply to the description “Any goods supplied in the course of the service must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for their purpose. Sell a car on the internet? Remember when selling a used car over the internet, the customer rights are the same as the rights they would have buying a car in person. In some circumstances, they may also have additional rights under the Distance Selling Regulations.

Selling your car - the options

  • Trade it in for a newer car; it’s convenient and easy, but you’ll often get less for the vehicle than if you were to sell it privately.
  • Sell it privately, this could be the local newspaper, sticking a for sale sign on the vehicle and parking it in a promininent place, use a classifieds website or even a card in local shop/supermarket window - old fashioned but still works. The more the car is worth, the further people will travel to buy it; obviously no-one will travel 250 miles to look at a £150 banger!
  • Sell it to a local car dealer garage. You’ll normally get little more than a straight trade in, but quick and easy
  • Sell it in an online auction. Works great for some but can be risky, remember to be realistic with the pricing and honest with the description; you could end up making a killing or losing a fortune. It depends on many factors at the time of listing.

  1. I have recently used my car supermarket to sell my BMW 320, I was lucky enough to get a company car with my new job so my BMW had to go. As it was only two years old I took it back to the dealer, but they offered my almost half what I had paid for it new!!! although I had never heard of my car supermarket I gave them ago as they list the vehicle on Autotrader for the same intial fee, £19.95. What did I have to lose? nothing in fact, the whole process ran pretty well and I ended up with £1000 more than the dealer had offered. I paid £100 in total to my car supermarket, they sent an engineer out to my house to carry out a check and even paid the insurance for the seller to take it for a drive, money well spent.
