Before you dive into the world of personalised car number plates please note that this is an unregulated industry, you can end up out of pockets using unscupulous cherished number dealers so always try and ensure the company you are dealing with belongs to the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association.

What are Private Number Plates?
When you buy a personal or private number plate essentially you are buying a license from the UK government to use that registration. The DVLA sells new registrations online and also has a number of auctions every year for higher value registrations around the country. in addition there are many companies, brokers, dealers and websites in the Uk selling on previously issued registrations. So the first place to check for your number is the DVLA itself, there is no point paying abroker for a new registration simply for them to add on fees and commissions and purchase direct from DVLA on your behalf! If you look around the dealers websites you will often see the same registration being advertised at vastly different prices, this generally means that either the registration is still available direct from the DVLA.

If you are looking for registrations that have already been issued then of course the DVLA cant track these so you have to do your own research to find the personalised number you want at the best possible price. Some of the better dealers will also offer to assist you through the administration process involved in transferring the registration to your car.

How do you transfer personalised registration plates?
its not as easy as you may think! first of all to transfer a plate you must be the registered keeper and both the recipient and donor vehicles must be licensed and have a valid MOT. In some cases if vehicle is unlicensed and a SORN has been made then plate can be transferred as long as vehicle has been licensed in last 12 months. Unfortunately what this means is that if you find a great registration on an old banger of a car thats almost rusted away then the license plate will have expired and you cannot transfer ot to another vehicle. To complete transfer of registration the registered keeper of the car must send a DVLA form V317 with V5 registration forms and MOT certificates for both vehciles if applicable. The costs ivolved are £80 to DVLA in addition to purchase price of registration to registered keeper.
