It’s a fact of life that to own and drive a car you will need to have that car insured. Most people think that the best deals for car insurance can be found by brokers who have contacts in the insurance industry, however when you look into the factors that determine insurance costs, as well as possible discounts that can be applied, you will see that finding inexpensive car insurance can be as simple as making the correct choices.

Factors determining your insurance premium

To break it down into bite sized chunks, there are about 10 factors that determine the amount you will pay for your insurance premium, some of them you can change and some of them you are stuck with. The most important factor in determining your premium is your driving history, basically if you have had your full drivers licence for over 5 years you can expect to pay roughly 60% less than someone who just got their licence, this can be worth considering if your five year licence anniversary is coming up.

Probably the second biggest factor is the type of car that you are insuring, if you haven’t brought a car yet then taking this into consideration can be the key to getting the most inexpensive car insurance, basically the bigger the engine of the car the more it will cost to insure. Generally certain types of people drive certain types of cars, and insurance companies use this generalisation when they determine the cost of insurance, so when buying a car, the trick for getting cheaper insurance is to think, and buy like a safe driver.

Other factors which determine the cost of insurance vary from where the car will be parked and what suburb you live in, and the way through to you criminal record. The only other factor which will have a large bearing on the cost of insurance is any modifications that have been made to the car, any modifications on a car which are not factory standard are considered to be additional risk, and if there are too many modifications some companies will refuse to insure.

Comparing rates online

One tool to help you determine what kind of car is best to buy or how much it will cost to insure is online comparison. Nowadays there are both private insurance companies that provide online quotes and insurance comparison websites that will tell you how much it will cost to insure a particular car at a range of different insurers; this is a great way to determine which the most inexpensive car insurance company is.

Ask for discounts

Many insurance companies will offer a discount off their rate but they won’t tell necessarily tell you this when you are doing your quote online. This being the case it is often a good idea to finalise your insurance details over the phone or in person to see if there are any discounts that you might be missing. The most common discounts to ask for are package discounts which you get when you ensure car, house and contents with the same company and cash up front discount which is generally a 10% discount that you will get for paying your years premium at the start of the year instead of monthly.
