If you’re disabled and want to get a car, you may have heard of the Motability scheme. In a nutshell, it’s a way for people to use their government mobility allowances towards the cost of leasing a brand new vehicle. Some folks also use it for buying a scooter or powered wheelchair.

The Motability scheme got established back in 1978, and since then it has helped more than 3 million Brits get on the road. At the time of writing, over 640,000 people are using the Motability scheme to get mobile. Are you interested in learning more about Motability? If so, keep reading to find out more about it!

What are the benefits of the Motability scheme?

As you already know, the scheme is a way of using your state mobility allowance towards the cost of a new car. But, what do you get for your money? It turns out that one can enjoy a vast array of benefits.

The primary benefit is the use of a brand new car for three years. Insurance and breakdown cover fees are also taken care of, as are servicing and tax. You even get free replacement tyres as part of the deal!

You can get a brand new car under the Motability scheme as long as you agree to do no more than 20,000 miles a year for the three-year duration. Other benefits include adaptations, many of which are at no extra cost to you. And you can also have up to two named drivers on your insurance policy.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why the Motability scheme makes perfect sense for disabled motorists.

What cars can you get under the Motability scheme?

The best bit is that most car makers are part of the scheme. For example, let’s say that you wanted to get a Toyota Aygo. You could contact the RRG Toyota Motability team to organise a new Aygo! Other firms like Vauxhall, Ford and Volkswagen also take part too.

One caveat of the Motability scheme is that you can’t have any model from a car maker’s model range.

So, while that Jaguar F-Type might be out of reach, you could always opt for a more practical vehicle. Perhaps even a family car like the Volkswagen Golf.

Who is eligible to join the Motability scheme?

If you want to lease a brand new car through the Motability scheme, you must be in receipt of a mobility allowance. You will also need to have at least one year’s worth of award length available.

It’s important to note that only the higher rate of your mobility allowance will get used. The amount of money that gets used towards a Motability car is as follows:

  • £57.45 per week – higher rate of mobility allowance. Also, enhance mobility rate component of the Personal Independence Payment. Contribution amount also applies to Armed Forces Independence Payment;
  • £64.15 per week – War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.

You can make significant cost savings by leasing a new car through the Motability scheme, so it’s worth finding out what you could save.
