Economical Driving Saves you Money
Believe it or not depending on how you drive you can make your car much more economical. You might not believe it and in fact the first time someone tried to tell me that I thought they were joking!
There are loads of things that you can do to improve the amount of miles you get out of each gallon of gas. Of course there are things that you can do that are more trouble than they’re worth, but there are also some small changes that really can make a lot of difference.
In order for your engine to run properly it is important that it is lubricated properly. Your engine, any joints, and bearings need lubrication to reduce friction and improve efficiency. Your garage might make you believe that you need to change your oil every 3000 miles, however the majority of car makers suggest changing the oil every 7,500 miles.
Buying oil for your car is very confusing as I recently found out, there’s no such thing as just oil. There are many different types of oil, all of which are different. There are Natural oils and synthetic oils. Natural oils are not as good as synthetic oils. Mobil 1 is a very popular oil as it’s fully synthetic and lubricates your engine well.
Ever since 1986 I’ve only ever used fully synthetic oils, since I’ve been using this I haven’t noticed any signs of abnormal wear on my engine, even though I’ve travelled over 200,000 miles! Synthetics can last 20,000 miles, so although they might be more expensive are a better value option as they last much longer. Due to being able to drive much longer with synthetic oils they will actually pay for themselves!
There are also a number of things that you can add to the oil; although everyone knows about these few people actually use them. In fact a recent study suggested that only 10% of Americans actually use these oil additives. This goes to show that few people actually believe that they can benefit your mileage. The thing is that they do work, however the effects are often limited. They work by putting a Teflon (or graphite, or ptfe) coating onto the cylinder. However to see any real benefits you must religiously add the additive every time you change your oil.
There are of course different metal treatments that can be used for better advantages. Oil additives will only put a coating of another material onto the metal. Treatment however bonds to the surface of the metal, or change the metals structure. Of course actually dismantling your engine and having the process done is both time consuming and expensive, however the results are worth it. I’m not suggesting that the results will be beneficial for everyone, but for people that do a lot of mileage then they might benefit. Metal conditioners will bond to the metal and often offer a 15-20% improvement in your mileage.
You really can improve your mileage if you want to; you just have to know what you need to do.
