Clarkeson shoot out
“2003 has been the best year for new cars - ever!”
- Jeremy Clarkson
And he’s not wrong. 2003 saw some excellent new cars appear on the market, but which one was the very best? In this DVD, Clarkson makes it his job to find out.
The DVD kicks off with the gorgeous Rolls Royce Phantom. £100,000 more expensive than a Vanquish, I could sell my house and still only be able to buy one of these.
But money isn’t everything here, as the Phantom falls apart trying to drag itself round the track, knocking out it of the competition right away.
The rest of the cars featured on the DVD are split into six sections.
Fun Cars, includes the VW Beetle, Mini Cooper and Lotus Elise.
GT Cars, includes the Aston Martin DB7, Porsche 911 GT3 and Lamborghini Gallardo.
Hot Hatchbacks, includes the Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R32 and Alfa Romeo 147GTA.
4 Wheel Drive, includes the Overfinch Range Rover, Mitsubishi EV08 and Audi S4.
Coupés, includes the Chrysler Crossfire, BMW Z4 and Mazda RX8.
Supercars, includes the Pagani Zonda and the Koenigsegg.
Clarkson takes the cars round the track, reviewing each one in his trademark humourous, irreverent style, and drops one traditional favourite from the competition for being simply too flashy. In his words, “All the fun would be lost if somebody called you a flash git at the lights!”
There’s even some caravan destruction and the obligatory jab at the Germans to keep Clarkson fans happy.
Even though the track tests seem somewhat squashed together with little in-between, making the DVD a bit repetitive at times, Shootout is packed with humour, tyre smoke and makes for excellent entertainment. A fine addition to any enthusiast’s collection.
The taste in music is questionable, to say the least, but you’re watching it for the cars, not the soundtrack!
