The lowdown on car insurance costs in the UK

10.9.2007 | 10:34 am | Car insurance

Have you ever wondered why car insurance is so expensive in the UK? Have a look at these figures and comments published by the Director of General Insurance at end of 2006.

If we take an average insurance premuim which is currently around £400, then £70 goes to the government, £30 goes towards the cost of drivers making fraudulent claims and another £30 goes towards the estimated 1 in 20 drivers who are not insured at all. OMG, that means the average driver is paying £130 a year in stealth taxes to the government and for uninsured drivers/fraudulent claims! Add into the equation the massive profits made by insurance companies then it becomes clear why insurance costs are so high.

Cheap insurance for convicted drivers

Ok, you have a less than perfect driving record, nobody’s perfect, we all make mistakes, suffer lack of concentration and maybe some of us have even got behind the wheel after a few drinks. We all have the occasional accident now and again. Why does it mean your car insurance premium has to go through the roof? While not condoning driving dangerously or under the influence, there are some great schemes for people looking for cheap convicted driver insurance.

Grey import car insurance
The grey or imported cars market has grown rapidly over the last few years with vehicles coming to the UK from all over the world. A used car that has been individually imported from Japan, USA or Europe without going through the established main dealer network and therefore not normally available in the UK is often referred to as grey import. By far the biggest import market is Japan with thousands of vehicles being imported from Japan every year. Insurers tend to classify imports into three categories, 4×4 imports such as Mitsubishi Pajero, Isuzu Big Horn, Toyota Surf and Toyota Prado. Grey MPV imports for example Toyota Estima/Lucida, Nissan Serena or Largo, Mitsubishi Delica and Toyota Hiace. Finally sports and performance import cars such as Mazda Eunos, Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline, Toyota Celica and of course Subaru Impreza and Legacy vehicles.

Cheapest car insurance young drivers
Traditionally, drivers under 21 or even 25, have not been the most popular people with car insurance companies! Quite simply the younger a driver is the higher the percieved risk to the insurers. Young male drivers are actually a higher risk than young females according to the statistics. So basically if you want to know an insurers nightmare customer, generally speaking its a young male driver with some convictions, looking to insure a high performance car(think Cosworth, Impreza WRX, Evo, Civic type R or any of the current crop og GTI hatchbacks or Japanese grey imports so popular amongst younger drivers!)

Car insurance for 1 day
Nowadays its fairly easy to get cover between 1-28 days for almost any purpose. However for cars in insurance groups 18-20, drivers must be aged 25 or over with most companies, in addition excess for young drivers up to 24 can be up to £750 for a high performance model and probably averages around £500. Although excess is often high the premiums themselves are fairly cheap, allowing you to get comprehensive 1 day car insurance for
a family member or close friend to drive your vehicle, a temporary additional vehicle, a newly purchased vehicle from an auction or car supermarket, a courtesy car, an unaccompanied test-drive of a car(some garages will insist on you taking insurance for an extended test drive particularly on prestige models) or even for track day driving or other racing events.

Why do I need breakdown cover for my car
Ever noticed those poor souls on the hard shoulder of the motorway, usually with a car full of kids on the way somewhere fun when disaster strikes and they are left stranded, frantically calling anyone and everyone they know to come and help them, but ultimately having to use the services of a local vehicle recovery service - frequently at the insistance of Police if causing hazard to other traffic - and being forced to pay the astronomical fees imposed!
