Your son or daughter has turned 16 years old and to every parent’s chagrin getting their drivers license. Now you are wonder whether or not to add your teen driver to you auto insurance policy or if you should check into specific car insurance for teens. One thing that is very important is to make sure you compare the rates of several different carriers. Some insurance companies specifically target the teen driver because of their inexperience in driving. Auto insurance for teens is seen as a great way to make a profit because the insurance company can get away with charging higher premiums by using the reasoning a teen driver is in a higher risk category.

It is possible to get discounted premiums on car insurance for teens. If the parents have been with the insurance carrier and have proven themselves to be low risk they will often offer discounts to a new teen driver in the family based on good grades, the normal requirement is a B average or higher. By encouraging your teen to get good grades you will be helping them get lower insurance premiums. This discount is often referred to as a “good student discount” and is given to the teen driver who can earn and maintain a specified grade point average every semester. Another way to keep your teens insurance premiums down is to explain to them how important it is to keep their driving record clean by avoiding tickets and accidents. Teen car insurance rates go through the roof if they are involved in accidents or are given tickets. Help them understand that tickets and accidents will stay on the on their driving record for a long time and could cause them to pay a higher rate for a long time until they have proven they are no longer a high risk. Another way to get cheap car insurance for teens is to encourage them to take driving courses offered by your insurer. Some insurers will offer a discount creating a lower rate if teens take and pass these courses. These courses teach defensive driving and how to avoid accidents better. Also, if your teen does get a ticket encourage them to attend traffic school which will help keep the ticket off their record.

Yes you now have a teenager behind the wheel. Don’t lose sleep over insuring this new driver in the household. Take a deep breath and do your research compare rates of many carriers and teach your teen how to drive defensively and safely. Both of you will be fine.
