Buying a used Ford Focus

The much loved Ford Focus is an excellent used buy (actually named by What car as their used car of the year in 2006). the best models to look at for bargains without headaches are model years 1998-2004. If budget will reach go for a facelifted 2002 model. All models are reasonably equipped and comfortable, however on earlier models safety features such as ABS and side airbags were optional so its worth seeking out those models.

secondhand ford focus Go for a five door hatchback with an LX or Zetec trim (but if a Zetec model try and find a car with aircon if possible for better resale) as these are the most common models giving you plenty to choose from. When you take a test drive prepare to be pleasantly surprised - this car won many accolades from motoring pundits due to its handling, steering, brakes and gearbox. this is a family car that can really put a smile on your face!

Common faults on Ford Focus 98-04
rust trap of used ford focusThe Focus is better than average when it comes to reliability, its no lexus but there are few horror stories either. Parts and servicing are really cheap and almost any mechanic will be familiar with them. Avoid automatic boxes on early models however as they are prone to failure and the repair costs could easily be more than the cars worth! Check for rust in centre of the tailgate at the bottom of the unusual V shaped rear window. Other reported faults include rumbly rear wheel bearings and failing power steering pumps, both of these problems tend to present at the 4-5 years old mark.

Focus running costs
A cheap vehicle to buy and to run, most models are in insurance groups 5-8 and will give fuel economy in the 37-55mpg range. spares are amongst the cheapest available and you can now buy a pristine late model facelifted Focus on a %4 plate for £6-7k. The best news of all is that previous owner(s) have already been stung with most of the depreciation costs. the best late models are to be found at Ford dealers as part of the Ford direct scheme
