In todays competitive marketplace cars are becoming more and more diversified, with gas guzzling executive 4×4’s lining up next to compact hybrids in showrooms. One of the first things many people do when they buy a new car is to try and make it their own by adding custom dealer and aftermarket accessories. Ever been really frustrated on a long drive by bored children? No wonder in car DVD systems are one of the hottest new upgrades in the car accessories marketplace.

Imagine, you’re headed on a long trip with your family and your kids are driving you round the bend. A car DVD system allows you to pop in one of their favorite films and keep them entertained (i.e. quiet! )for hours on end leaving you to concentrate on the road ahead.

There are many different manufacturers and models of in car dvd player available, but the two main types of in car DVD systems are portable and in-dash. Portable systems, though not as handy or stress-free as the in-dash systems, are much cheaper and obviously more versatile. These are usually powered by your car’s 12-volt power adapter/cigarette lighter but you can purchase adaptors to run them from mains power supply relatively cheaply.

In-dash car DVD systems are hardwired into your vehicle’s entertainment system, therefore usually require professional fitting unless you are a real DIY enthusiast - note always check your car warranty for exclusions when fitting any aftermarket systems making sure you are not invalidating any future warranty claims. In car systems display video either on a screen in the centre console, a roof mounted screen, or on a screen which flips up from the dashboard. Though these systems are not portable, once installed they don’t require any extra cables or complicated setup: you can load in your DVD’s and drive away. Screens located either on the center console or which flip up from the dashboard can double as displays for in-car GPS or navigation software, but some complain they can be distracting to drivers. The flip-down screens avoid driver distraction, but they are usually only convenient for back-seat viewing, so if you regularly transport children in the front seat you may have a mutiny on your hands!

In car DVD systems are perhaps the biggest bonus to the long family journey since I-spy was invented, and as multimedia technology improves you can expect DVD in car systems to get smaller, lighter, and hopefully cheaper. Though portable systems are still the choice for many families on the go since they require no expensive installation or warranty problems, more and more car manufacturers have plans to include built-in systems in their vehicles, especially in the people carrier, SUV and MPV vehicles. In fact it may be difficult to find a driver for your next long journey, as everyone will want to be stretched out in the back seats, checking out the latest DVD releases!
